Hi! We’re Wim & Sam
Two Belgians who came to Australia, fell for it, and never left. We now live here and have spent more than four years exploring the country by 4WD.
We started as complete outsiders. We didn’t grow up camping, we’d never driven on sand, and we had no idea what a “wet season” meant for a road trip.
That’s why we’re here to help: we know what you don’t know yet, and we know know what the locals forget to mention.

Why we started Bush and Bay
When we first started travelling Australia, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing.
We didn’t grow up camping. We weren’t experienced off-road travellers. We had no clue how to travel off-grid or plan remote adventures properly.
Everything we learned came through experience, mistakes, trial and error, and simply getting out there and giving it a go. That’s exactly why Bush and Bay exists today.
We know how overwhelming planning a trip around Australia can feel. There’s so much information online, but a lot of it feels generic, outdated or written by people who haven’t actually experienced the places they’re talking about.
We wanted to create something different. A place filled with genuinely helpful travel information from people who are actually out there exploring Australia themselves.
Real experiences. Real advice.
Not every place lives up to the Instagram hype, and not every piece of gear is worth the money. We’re here to give you the real version, so you can make better decisions for your own trip.
That’s exactly why we built this website. To share practical information and honest opinions we wish we had when we started our journey around Australia.
How we travel
Our Touring Setups
We’ve travelled Australia in a few different setups throughout the years, and each one has taught us something:
We had our very first experience towing a camper trailer with a rooftop tent, which taught us a lot about what we like and what we don’t like. That’s when we started building the ultimate touring vehicle for full-time travel, which suits our style. There were a few non-negotiables:
- No more towing,
- A comfortable space inside to escape bad weather
- A toilet inside
- Enough power, water and storage to stay off-grid for at least a week
- Something that can handle remote Australian 4WD tracks and ruthless corrugations
Since 2025, we have been travelling in our Toyota Land Cruiser 79 series with a Tommy Campers (slide-on camper), built for overlanding. It’s a setup we’ve built around the way we travel.
