We’ve camped here twice now, and what makes camping Robe SA so good is the range. You can be tucked into a 4WD-only site behind the dunes one night and plugged into power with hot showers five minutes from the pub the next.

Camping in Little Dip Conservation Park

From $19.80 per night

Little Dip Conservation Park is the ultimate spot for 4WD enthusiasts and off-grid campers. It has rugged coastal scenery, sand dunes and beautiful beaches. I would describe it as the wild side of Robe. In this park you’ll find four campgrounds to choose from. Each offering something a little different.

This is where camping in Robe SA gets genuinely good. You’re only a few minutes from town, but once you’re behind the dunes, it feels a long way from anywhere.

Before you book Little Dip, here’s what you should know:

1. Stony Rise Campground

Stony Rise Campground is the closest one to the charming town of Robe. A sheltered campground that is part of the exciting 4WD Stony Rise Track. With limited sites and being 4WD only, it feels very remote, even though it’s so close to town. This campground is the ideal place to stay overnight before or after you hit the Robe to Beachport run.

• Sites: 6 allocated campsites
• Access: 4WD only, also suitable for off-road camper trailers 
• Facilities: Long drop toilet
• Close to: 800 metres to surf beach and rock pools
• Ideal for: Adventurous campers who love 4WD tracks and being close to the ocean

This is my pick of the four if you’re set up for it. It’s the one that feels most like proper camping in Robe SA rather than staying at a caravan park.

2. The Gums Campground 

Nestled amongst the trees, The Gums Campground is a great option when you’re looking for somewhere to hide from the rough coastal winds. It’s close to the main track, making it accessible for both 2WD and 4WD. It’s the ideal spot for caravans and camper trailers, and close to the walking tracks around Lake Robe.

• Sites: 5 allocated campsites
• Access: high clearance 2WD and 4WD. Also suitable for caravans & camper trailers
• Facilities: Long drop toilet
• Close to: Coastal dunes and walking tracks
• Best for: Sheltered camping from the wind 

Don’t underestimate how much that shelter matters. The coastal wind here can turn a warm afternoon miserable, and it’s the single most common thing people get caught out when camping in Robe SA.

3. Long Gully Campground

Long Gully Campground is one of the best spots for larger groups. There are no designated campsites, and it can fit up to 20 vehicles. It’s only a short walk to the beach, the ideal spot to watch the sunset.

• Sites: No designated sites, open space up to 20 vehicles
• Access: 2WD and 4WD, suitable for caravans and camper trailers
• Facilities: Long drop toilet
• Close to: 400 metres from the beach
• Best for: Groups and caravans

Because there are no marked sites, how good this one feels depends entirely on how busy it is. Midweek outside the holidays, you might have it to yourself. Over summer, with 20 vehicles in, it’s a different experience, and it’s worth knowing before you book.

4. Old Man Lake Campground

If you prefer quiet and serene lake views, Old Man Lake Campground just off Nora Creina Road is a top choice. It’s peaceful, scenic and a great spot to relax after a long adventurous day.

• Sites: 7 allocated sites
• Access: 2WD and 4WD, suitable for camper trailers
• Facilities: Long drop toilet
• Close to: Old Man Lake
• Best for: Beautiful lake views

Free camping near Robe

Free camping in Robe SA is limited, and I’d rather be straight with you about that than have you drive around looking. Of all the Robe camping options, this is the only free one on Wikicamps; it’s small, and it’s basic.

If you’re looking for a free camp, there’s a small roadside rest area just outside of Robe next to Lake Eliza. 

• Address: 5180 Southern Ports Hwy, Robe SA
• Facilities: Rubbish bin, picnic table
• Capacity: 2-3 vehicles max
• Cost: Free
• Suits: Self-contained vehicles only

This spot is very basic. There are no toilets or water, but if you’re just looking for a quick overnight stop, this place is just perfect.

What free camping in Robe realistically looks like

Because it comes up a lot, here’s the honest picture. Robe is a small town that gets very busy in summer, and it doesn’t have the free camping options you’d find further inland. The Lake Eliza rest area fits only two or three vehicles, so on a summer evening there’s a fair chance it’ll already be taken.

If you’re travelling on a budget and free camping in Robe SA doesn’t work out, the unpowered sites at Little Dip are the next cheapest option, and they’re a far better experience than a roadside pull-off.

A few things worth knowing: overnight parking isn’t permitted in the town’s carpark or along the foreshore, and it is enforced over summer. Don’t plan on it. If you use the Lake Eliza rest area, it’s a rest area, not a campground. Set up late, leave early, and take everything with you.

Beach camping in Robe

This is one of the most common questions about camping in Robe SA, so it’s worth answering directly: you can’t camp on Long Beach itself. you can drive onto the sand and spend the day there, but it’s a day-use beach, not a campground.

What you can do is camp close enough that the beach is a short walk. Long Gully in Little Dip is about 400 metres from the sand. Stony Rise is around 800 metres from a surf beach and rock pools. Sea Vu Caravan Park sits right on the coast above Town Beach. That’s as close to beach camping in Robe as you’ll get.

Caravan Parks in Robe

If roughing it isn’t your idea of a holiday, the caravan parks are the easy end of camping in Robe SA. Robe has four caravan parks offering fantastic locations and all the amenities for a comfortable stay. All the parks offer a camp kitchen, powered sites, unpowered sites, and you can book online or book direct at the park.

Are you looking for a camp site with million-dollar beachfront views, a peaceful lakesite escape, or a family friendly park with plenty of activities? Robe has it all. Here are a few caravan parks that stood out for us:

A fantastic family friendly park with access to Long Beach and The Outlet. Discovery Parks Robe is ideal when you want to be close to the beach, and a bit further away from town.

• Best for: Families and beach lovers
• Facilities: Powered and unpowered sites, cabins and modern amenities
• Walking distance: short stroll to the beach and scenic coastal walking trails

7. Lakeside Tourist Park

If you prefer a quiet and nature-filled stay, Lakeside Tourist Park has a few peaceful sites on the shores of Lake Fellmongery, while still being close to town.

• Best for: A quiet, nature filled stay, close to town
• Facilities: Powered and unpowered sites, cabins, camp kitchen, laundry, playground and a fish cleaning station
• Lake frontage: Powered sites right on the water

Lake Fellmongery is Robe’s ski lake, so it can get lively over summer with the waterskiing and wakeboarding crowd. Peaceful most of the year, not so much in January.

8. Robe. Holiday Park

On the corner of Main Road and Nora Creina Road, Robe Holiday Park sits between the town and the turn-off towards Little Dip, which makes it a practical base if you’re splitting your time between the two.

• Best for: A base for both town and Little Dip
• Facilities: Powered and unpowered sites, cabins, full amenities
• Handy for: The Beacon Hill mountain bike trails

When to book and what to bring

Two things I’d tell anyone planning on camping in Robe SA:

Book Early for summer

Robe goes from 1,600 residents to something like 20,000 visitors over the summer months, and the campgrounds go with it. Over Christmas, January, and Easter, the good sites at Little Dip and the ocean-view sites at Sea Vu are booked well in advance. Outside those windows, you’ll have far more choice and pay less for it.

Pack for wind, not just weather

This coastline is exposed, and the wind is the thing that catches people out. We’ve camped here twice, both times in autumn, and the days were warm while the nights were properly cold once the wind picked up.

Why Camping in Robe is a must-do

Robe is a paradise when it comes to camping. You’ll find options for every type of traveller. From remote 4WD camps, a scenic lakeside spot or a caravan park with all the bells and whistles, there is a spot to please every camper. When you’re up for an adventure, we can highly recommend Little Dip Conservation Park. But if you prefer more comfort, a caravan park may be the best way to go.
