We’ve tried both, and while a campervan has its charm, it won’t take you off the beaten path. You’ll always find the best spots where the normal road ends.
If you want to experience the real Australia, connect with wildlife and be outdoors, we highly recommend a 4WD.
We’ve ventured through parts of Australia with our off-grid camper trailer from Patriot Campers in 2023 and 2024, but after two years of towing, we were ready for something new. We spent a lot of time thinking about the perfect overlanding setup, and we believe we have now created the ultimate setup to explore the most remote corners of this beautiful country. We bought a brand-new dual-cab 79-series in 2024 and decided that a Tommy Camper S6X was the perfect off-road slide-on camper for us. Six months in the making, and now full-time on the road for more than a year.
