Esperance Camping Guide: where to camp in Esperance in 2026
When it comes to exploring Esperance, we genuinely believe thereโs no better way to do it than by camping. And the good news? There are a few Esperance camping options available for you to choose from.
We spent four weeks exploring Esperance in Western Australia, and experienced everything from caravan parks and national park campgrounds, to the overflow and free camps. Along the way, we learned a few lessons that would have made planning much easier if weโd known them beforehand.
This Esperance camping guide is made for anyone travelling with a caravan, campervan, camper trailer or 4WD. We cover the best Esperance camping options and everything we wish we knew before arriving.
โค If youโre in the middle of planning your trip to Esperance, make sure you start with our guide to the best Beaches in Esperance.
What we wish we knew about Esperance camping
What we noticed about Esperance camping was just how incredibly busy it gets.
We visited in February, which is outside of the school holiday period, and still struggled to find availability in many campgrounds. If youโre travelling on a strict itinerary, this isnโt a huge problem because you can book ahead.
Howeverโฆ If youโre doing a longer Western Australia road trip like we were, where plans change regularly, finding a campsite can become a little bit more challenging.
If we could give one piece of advice, book ahead whenever possible. Especially if youโre hoping to stay in town or camp inside Cape Le Grand National Park.
Caravanparks Esperance
There are several caravan parks in and around Esperance, but availability can be surprisingly limited.
During our stay, the only caravan park with limited availability was Esperance Pink Lake Tourist Park. Every other park we contacted was fully booked.
This came a bit as a surprise because we thought we werenโt travelling during peak season. But it highlighted just how popular Esperance camping has become.
If you prefer powered sites, amenities and being close to town, itโs worth booking a few months in advance.
Dunns Eco Park
Located about 30 minutes from Cape Le Grand National park, Dunnโs Eco Park is a great alternative if you miss out on camping inside Cape le Grand National Park.
Duke of Orleans caravan park
If visiting Wharton Beach is high on your list, Duke of Orleans Caravan park is also a great option.

Esperance overflow campground
The Esperance overflow campground saved us more than once. When every other option was booked out and we needed to be in town, this campground was able to accommodate us.
Our first experience was actually quite positive. The campground wasnโt overly busy, the camp host was friendly, and the amenities were clean and well maintained. Thereโs a camp kitchen, toilets and showers (2 showers for men and 3 for the ladies)
Unfortunately, our second and third stays were very different.
The campground was significantly busier, one of the shower heads was broken, the toilets werenโt being maintained as well, and the overall experience felt overcrowded.
At $40 per night for an unpowered gravel pit, we personally didnโt feel it offered great value. Butโฆ if youโre stuck and need somewhere to stay during peak season, itโs still one of the most reliable Esperance camping options available.
Free camping in Esperance
Many travellers ask about free Esperance camping, but there’s no legal free camping in Esperance town allowed. However, there are a few options out of town.
Condingup Tavern
About 45 minutes east of Esperance, youโll find Condingup Tavern. The tavern allows travellers to camp at their property, and itโs a great excuse to enjoy a pub meal or cold drink while supporting the business.
Itโs also a great location if youโre planning to visit Wharton Beach the following day.
Gravel pit near Condingup
Thereโs also an unofficial gravel pit about 10 minutes away from Condingup Tavern. We found it a great place for a quick overnight stay, and itโs also close to Wharton Beach.
There are also other free camps you can find on apps like WikiCamps.
As always, if youโre free camping, please do the right thing.
One of the biggest issues we noticed while travelling Western Australia was the amount of toilet paper and human waste left behind. If youโre free camping, either carry a portable toilet or dig a proper hole away from the campgrounds.
The future of free Esperance camping depends on travellers respecting these places.
Beach camping Esperance
If beach camping is what youโre really chasing, Cape le Grand National Park is where you want to be.
Technically, the campgrounds arenโt located directly on the sand, but theyโre close enough that youโll wake up and be on some of Australiaโs best beaches within minutes.
For us, this was easily the highlight of our entire Esperance camping experience.

Camping Cape le Grand
If you can secure a booking inside Cape Le Grand National Park, do it. Seriously.
We booked our campsite six months in advance and ended up making a huge detour during our travels just to make sure we didnโt miss it. And after staying there, weโd do exactly the same thing again.
Over the four weeks we spent in Esperance, we checked for cancellations almost daily because we loved the area so much and wanted to return. Not once did we find availability.
That should tell you everything you need to know about how popular this Esperance camping destination has become.
But since then, we’ve started using Schnerp, which monitors campsite cancellations and emails you the moment a spot becomes available. It didn’t exist when we were travelling through Esperance, but honestly, I wish it did. You still need to be quick when an alert comes through, but it’s a much easier option than checking the website every day. If camping at Cape Le Grand National Park is on your list, I genuinely think it’s worth having a look.
โค Set up your cancellation alerts here.
Once youโve created your alert, youโre all set. The first few alerts are free, so you can try it out before deciding itโs right for you. If you choose to continue, Bush and Bay readers get 10% off with the code BUSHANDBAY.

Lucky bay camping Esperance
Camping at Lucky Bay was one of the highlights of our entire Western Australia trip. Not only do you have direct access to the famous beach, but youโre also perfectly positioned to explore many of the other incredible beaches, hikes and lookouts within Cape le Grand National Park.
Lucky Bay campground is divided into two camping areas, and each area has its own camp host. When booking, you canโt select a campsite. Sites are allocated on a first come, first served basis once you arrive.
As usual, we arrived just before dark, and there was only one site left so we had no choice. Thankfully, campers come and go daily, so if youโre not happy with your spot, itโs worth having a walk around the next morning.
Facilities include:
- Hot showers
- Flushing toilets
- Camp kitchen
- Picnic areas
- Easy beach access
If youโre visiting Esperance for the first time, this is the Esperance camping experience weโd recommend above all others.
โค For more information about the beach itself, check out our detailed guide to Lucky Bay
Le Grand Beach campground
Before arriving, I honestly didnโt realise there was a second campground within Cape Le Grand National Park. But there is! It’s Le Grand Beach Campground.
While we spent plenty of time enjoying Le Grand Beach itself, we never managed to secure a campsite here. Every day we checked for cancellations, but unfortunately, we werenโt lucky enough to grab one.

Outside the national park, there are several campgrounds managed by the Shire of Esperance.

Best camping Esperance
After spending a month exp region, our favourite Esperance camping experience was easily Lucky Bay.
Maybe it was because weโd been looking forward to it for six months. Or maybe it was because of the crystal-clear water, white sand and incredible location. Or maybe it was simply because we were waking up every morning knowing some of Australiaโs most beautiful beaches were only a short walk away.
Whatever the reason, if youโre planning a trip to Esperance and you can secure a booking, Lucky Bay deserves a spot at the very top of your list.
And while youโre there, donโt miss nearby highlights like Wharton Beach, Cape Le Grand National Park and the many spectacular beaches that make Esperance one of our favourite destinations in Western Australia.
