Beaches in Esperance: complete guide to lucky bay, twilight beach and more
If you’re planning a trip to Esperance in the south of Western Australia, chances are you’ve already seen photos of the insanely white sand and blue water. And to be honest, the photos still don’t do it justice. The beaches in Esperance are some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve seen anywhere in Australia, and after weeks of exploring the region, we completely understand why people rave about this place.
What surprised us most about the beaches in Esperance is how different they all are. Some are calm and protected lagoons perfect for swimming, while others are wild surf beaches. Some are easily accessible and close to town, while others require a 4WD. That variety is what makes Esperance such a diverse destination.
The beaches in Esperance aren’t just about swimming either. Some are the perfect location for that slow morning with a takeaway coffee from town, while others are all about driving along endless stretches of white sand, or watching kangaroos hop across the sand at sunrise.
After exploring every corner of Esperance and waiting out plenty of windy days to experience these beaches properly, we’ve put together this guide to help you plan your trip. We’ll share our favourite beaches in Esperance, the best time to visit, what to expect with the weather, where to camp, and the beaches we genuinely think are worth your time if you don’t have weeks to explore.

Why are the Beaches in Esperance so special?
There’s something different about the beaches in Esperance compared to other coastal destinations in Australia. Maybe it’s the contrast between the bright white sand and the ridiculously turquoise water. Maybe it’s the huge granite boulders scattered along the coastline. Or maybe the fact that many of these beaches still feel untouched, even though they’re so close to town.
Where is Esperance located?

Esperance is a coastal town located in the south-east of Western Australia, located along the stunning southern coastline overlooking the Southern Ocean. It’s located around 720 kilometres south-east of Perth, which is roughly an 8-hour drive depending on your route and stops along the way.
Esperance is also the gateway to some incredible national parks and coastal drives, including Cape Le Grand National Park, where you’ll find famous beaches like Lucky Bay. The region is famous for its bright white sand, turquoise water and endless coastal scenery.
➤ If you’re road tripping around Western Australia, Esperance is often combined with places like Albany, Denmark and Margaret River. Get inspired by our 2-week Perth to Esperance Road Trip Itinerary.
Beaches in Esperance
Esperance has over 20 beaches along the coastline. One thing we noticed quickly is that the beaches in Esperance are spread across three main areas:
Beaches near Esperance town
These are mostly found along the famous Great Ocean Drive, a scenic coastal loop that takes you past some of the most accessible beaches in Esperance. Beaches like Twilight Beach, Blue Haven and West Beach are all close to town and perfect when you’re staying in town and don’t want to drive too far.
➤ If you want to explore this coastline properly, read our full Great Ocean Drive Esperance Guide.
Beaches in Cape Le Grand National Park
This is where you’ll find some of the most famous beaches in Esperance, including Lucky Bay, Hellfire Bay and Thistle Cove. Cape Le Grand National Park is about an hour east of Esperance and is absolutely worth dedicating a few days to.

Beaches outside town
As there are over 20 breathtaking beaches in Esperance, I could list every single one, but instead, we want to focus on the beaches we genuinely loved and would return to ourselves.
Our favourite beaches in Esperance
Wharton Beach
Out of all the beaches in Esperance, Wharton Beach was probably the one we kept going back to the most. There’s just something about this place that feels incredibly relaxed.
You can drive directly onto the beach with a 4WD, there’s usually a fun little wave for surfing, and it’s often more protected from the wind than beaches like Lucky Bay
Wharton Beach is about an hour east of Esperance, and while it’s a bit further to reach, it’s absolutely worth the drive.
One thing we learned about the beaches in Esperance is that wind direction matters a lot. If Lucky Bay is getting smashed by wind, Wharton Beach is often calm and protected.
If you’re travelling with a surfboard, this is definitely one of the best beaches in Esperance to tick off.
➤ If you’re planning on spending some time here, read our full guide about Wharton Beach to plan your trip.

Twilight Beach
Twilight Beach is probably the most popular beach close to Esperance town, and we totally understand why.
Even though it gets busy during summer, especially with families, it’s still one of the most beautiful beaches in Esperance. The water here is incredibly clear, the sand is bright white, and the iconic granite rock sitting just offshore has become one of Esperance’s most photographed spots.
We loved this place so much because you can jump off the rock. Although, conditions truly matter here. There can be a bit of sweep depending on the swell, so always check before swimming out.
Twilight beach is also one of the more protected beaches in Esperance, making it a great option when other beaches are windy.
Because it’s part of the Great Ocean Drive, it’s super easy to combine with other nearby beaches and lookouts in one day.

Lucky Bay
You can’t talk about the beaches in Esperance without mentioning Lucky Bay.
This is probably the most iconic beach in the region, and yes, it really is that beautiful. The sand is unbelievably white, the water ridiculously blue, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot kangaroos relaxing on the beach.
Lucky Bay is located within Cape Le Grand National Park and what we love about it is that you can drive onto the beach. Even though it’s incredibly popular, we still loved it. The beach is huge and even on busy days, it rarely feels overcrowded, especially when you drive further down the beach to get away from the 2WDs and rentals.
Even though we camped at Lucky Bay Campground for 5 nights, not once did we see kangaroos on the beach. I guess we weren’t that lucky.
➤ If you’re planning to visit Lucky Bay, read our full Lucky Bay Guide, where we cover camping, beach driving, and everything you need to know before you go.

Hellfire Bay
Hellfire Bay, located within Cape Le Grand National Park, was one of our favourite beaches in Esperance for swimming. The water here is so calm, crystal clear, and protected by granite headlands. When we arrived here, we wanted to spend the whole day here.
Because the carpark and day use area are so close to the beach, Hellfire Bay is one of the easiest beaches in Esperance to access. But that convenience also means it gets busy during peak season. But it’s still worth visiting. The contrast between the turquoise water, white sand and granite rocks is just incredible.

Little Hellfire Bay
If you’re willing to walk 30 minutes, Little Hellfire Bay feels like a completely different world.
The walk from hellfire bay takes around 30 minutes, and that alone seems to stop many people from going there. There were far fewer people out, making it our favourite beach in Cape Le Grand national park.
We spent a fair few hours here swimming and relaxing. If you don’t mind a walk, this is one of the best beaches in Esperance to escape the crowds.

Thistle Cove
Thistle Cove was one of the biggest surprises for us.
Many people visiting Cape Le Grand National Park focus only on Lucky Bay and Hellfire Bay, but Thistle Cove deserves just as much attention.
The beach itself is stunning, but what makes it really special is the huge granite formations surrounding the cove. The famous “Whistling Rock” is located here too.
Compared to some of the other beaches in Esperance, Thistle Cove felt much quieter and more relaxed. We’d definitely recommend combining it with Little Hellfire on the same day, Thistle Cove in the morning and Little Hellfire Bay in the afternoon.

Wylie Bay
Wylie Bay is one of the most photographed beaches in Esperance, especially from above.
At low tide, the sand bar becomes accessible, and it’s just pure magic.
It’s only a short drive from town, but somehow, Wylie Bay feels so remote and untouched. When we visited, the 4WD access track was quite soft and steep, so deflating your tyres is a good idea.
Wylie Beach is also one of the best beaches in Esperance for sunrise photography when the tide is low.
If you are a capable 4WDer, you can drive up the rock or cross the road and enjoy a drive through Wylie Dunes.

11 Mile Lagoon
If you’re looking for calm water and fewer crowds, 11 Mile Lagoon is one of the best beaches in Esperance to relax.
The lagoon itself is usually calm and protected, while the waves crash further out beyond the reef. We visited early in the morning and had the place almost entirely to ourselves.
Compared to some of the more famous beaches in Esperance, this spot feels incredibly peaceful.

Blue Haven

Blue Haven is another famous stop along the Great Ocean Drive.
The staircase leading down to the beach has become iconic, and once you see the colour of the water, you’ll understand why. On calm sunny days, Blue Haven is pure paradise.
But when we visited (twice), it was incredibly windy. That’s one thing about the beaches in Esperance. Conditions can completely change your experience. But if you are lucky with the weather, Blue Haven is absolutely stunning.
West Beach
West Beach is one of the best surf beaches in Esperance. Even if you don’t surf, it’s still worth visiting just to watch the waves roll in while sitting on the lookout benches above the beach.
As it’s so close to Esperance itself, we spent a few mornings here with takeaway coffees from town, simply watching surfers in the water. The coastline here is much wilder compared to the calmer beaches in Esperance around Cape Le Grand National Park.

Cape Le Grand Beach

Cape Le Grand Beach within the national park often gets overlooked because Lucky Bay gets all the attention, but we actually loved how much quieter it felt.
The beach is huge, incredibly beautiful and also accessible for 4WD beach driving. You can also drive all to way to town on Cape Le Grand Beach, and it’s much shorter than taking the inland road. We highly recommend doing this if you travel with a 4WD.
Victoria Harbour (4WD only)
Victoria Harbour was one of the most beautiful beaches in Esperance we visited, but it requires a bit more effort to reach.
You’ll need a 4WD and be confident in beach driving, but once you arrive, the scenery is incredible. The sunsets here were honestly some of the best we experienced around Esperance.
If you enjoy more remote beaches, Victoria Harbour is absolutely worth it.

Best time to visit the beaches in Esperance
The best time to visit the beaches in Esperance really depends on what kind of trip you want.
Summer (December to February)
Summer is when Esperance is at its busiest. The weather is warmer, the water is beautiful for swimming, and the beaches in Esperance truly show off their colours.
But there are a few major downsides:
- School holidays make it extremely busy
- The wind can be relentless
And to be completely honest, the wind will make or break your Esperance experience.
A calm, sunny day completely transforms the beaches in Esperance. The water turns bright turquoise, swimming becomes much more enjoyable, and everything feels magical.
But when it’s cold, windy and overcast, the experience feels completely different.
Shoulder Season (February to April)
This was personally our favourite time of the year. You still get beautiful warm days, but there are fewer crowds. The weather becomes more unpredictable, but if you have flexibility in your schedule, shoulder season is a fantastic time to visit the beaches in Esperance.
Winter
Winter will still be beautiful, but expect colder temperatures, rough weather and strong winds. We don’t think this is the ideal camping weather or best experience, but you’ll surely beat the crowds.
Things to know before visiting the beaches in Esperance
Wind & Weather
This is probably the biggest thing we learned during our time in Esperance. You can wake up to calm conditions and sunshine, and then the wind turns… If you’re staying for several days, keep your plans flexible.
Wind direction matters
Locals constantly check the wind direction before choosing which beaches to visit. Some beaches in Esperance become completely exposed during certain winds, while others remain calm and protected.
The water is Fresh
Even during summer, the water can feel surprisingly cold. You probably won’t mind on warm sunny days, but it’s worth knowing before you jump in expecting tropical temperatures.
Don’t rush Esperance
The biggest thing we learned here is that you can’t squeeze everything in one or two days.
To really experience the beaches in Esperance properly, we’d recommend at least four to five days, especially if weather conditions aren’t ideal.
Can you camp on beaches in Esperance?
You can camp near some of the beaches in Esperance, such as Lucky Bay and Cape Le Grand Beach. These places require online bookings and a WA national parks pass.
There’s no free camping in town, the nearest free camp is about an hour from town, but there are caravan parks and an overflow.

The Great Ocean Drive: The best coastal drive in Esperance
One of the best ways to experience the beaches in Esperance is by driving the Great Ocean Drive. This scenic coastal route loops around the coastline near town and takes you past many of Esperance’s most famous beaches. Some highlights include:

- 11 Mile Lagoon
- Observatory Point
The drive itself is beautiful and there are plenty of places to stop for swimming, surfing or simply enjoying the views.

Cape Le Grand National Park
Cape Le Grand National Park is home to some of the most iconic beaches in Esperance. If you only have limited time in Esperance, this is the area we’d prioritise most.
The combination of the white sandy beaches, granite mountains and turquoise water is just incredible. Some of the best beaches inside the national park are:
- Lucky Bay
- Hellfire Bay
- Little Hellfire Bay
- Thistle Cove
- Cape Le Grand Beach
We’d highly recommend staying in the national park if campsites are available.
➤ Our Cape Le Grand National Park guide covers everything you need to know.
How long should you spend in Esperance?
If possible, we’d recommend spending at least four to five days exploring Esperance.
This gives you enough flexibility to
- Explore the beaches in Esperance properly
- Wait out bad weather if needed
- Spend time in Cape Le Grand National Park
- Drive the great ocean drive
- Relax instead of rushing
If you love beach destinations and slower travel, you could easily spend weeks here. Trust us, we did it and we certainly didn’t get bored.
Why we’d go back in a heartbeat
The beaches in Esperance genuinely exceeded our expectations.
Yes, the photos are beautiful. The water really is that blue. And even though it’s busy, the beaches somehow still feel a bit untouched. Taking your 4WD onto the beach, set up for the day makes it just a way better experience.
We also loved the variety of all the beaches. Some were perfect for swimming, while others were great for surfing, rock jumping or just relaxing and enjoying the view.
If we had one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t rush Esperance.
Give yourself enough time to properly experience these beaches. Wait for good weather, and explore beyond the famous spots.
