Wharton Beach Guide: WA’s Most Beautiful Turquoise Beach
If there’s one place on our journey across Western Australia that has truly captured our hearts, it has to be Wharton Beach.
Even now, months after our visit, we often find ourselves scrolling back through our photos and videos, still in awe of how beautiful it was. It is just one of those rare locations that feels like a desktop screensaver come to life, but no image can quite prepare you for the feeling of actually being there.
The water here is a shade of turquoise so vibrant it almost looks painted, and the sand is so so fine, in fact, it literally squeaks beneath your feet as you walk, just like fresh snow. On a calm day, the ocean is as clear as glass, inviting you to dive straight in, and the fact that you can drive your 4WD right onto the sand just makes it complete.
We loved Wharton Beach so much that we kept going back during our time in Esperance. We actually had a bit of a laugh after our first day there. We genuinely thought about not going back because we were convinced that the memory of that perfect day was so high that a second visit could only lead to disappointment. However, we were wrong. Every single time we pulled onto that sand, the place managed to meet and even exceed our incredibly high expectations. It has a certain magic to it that is hard to put into words.

Where is Wharton Beach
Wharton Beach is tucked away in Duke of Orleans Bay, which is about an hour east of Esperance between Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid National Park.
The Duke of Orleans Bay area is known for its sheltered bays, turquoise water, excellent fishing, boating, surfing and white sandy beaches. While many people visit Esperance for Lucky Bay, we genuinely think Wharton Beach deserves just as much attention.
Best time to visit Wharton Beach
While you can certainly visit Wharton Beach at any time of th eyear just to take in the views, your experience will vary significantly depending on the season. If your goal is to spend hours in the water (whether that’s surfing, swimming or just floating), then the summer months are definitely the time to go.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Southern Ocean is famously fresh. Even in the height of summer, the water can feel quite fresh when you first jump in. But I’ll have to admit, on those hot Western Australian days when the sun is beating down, that cool, refreshing water is exactly what you need.
Wind direction matters at Wharton Beach
If we could give you just one piece of advice for visiting Wharton Beach, it would be this: check the wind forecast before you leave Esperance.
The beach is most enjoyable when the wind is coming from the north or north-east. These wind directions tend to create calmer, cleaner conditions with clearer water and smaller waves, making it ideal for swimming, relaxing and spending the day at the beach.
We’d always recommend planning your visit around the weather, because Wharton Beach on a calm day feels completely different to Wharton Beach during an overcast day with strong onshore winds.
Can you drive on Wharton Beach?
Yes, you can drive on Wharton Beach, and it’s one of the biggest drawcards for Wharton Beach.
While the sand can often be quite firm, there are patches that get very soft, especially near the entrance. A high-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended. During one of our visits, we saw a large rental motorhome get badly bogged. We wouldn’t recommend attempting it in a 2WD vehicle.
If you’re unsure, there’s a carpark right at the entrance to the beach where you can safely leave your vehicle and walk down instead.
As always when beach driving, keep an eye on the incoming tides, and drop your tyre pressure when the sand is too soft.
Does Wharton Beach have toilets?
Yes, there are public toilets located at the main car park entrance to Wharton Bay.
There aren’t many other facilities there, so bring your own food, drinks and anything else you might need for the day.
Can you camp on Wharton Beach?
While it would be a dream to wake up right on the sand, camping directly on Wharton Beach is not permitted. But there are a few good options nearby.
The most popular choice is Duke of Orleans Bay Caravan Park, which is only a short drive away and the most popular camping spot near Wharton Beach.
If you don’t mind staying a little further away, another great option is at Condingup Tavern. Here you can enjoy a pub meal before settling in for the night.

Are there sharks at Wharton Beach?
Like many beaches along the southern coast of Western Australia, sharks are present in the ocean around Wharton Beach.
There was a very sad and tragic fatal incident at Wharton Beach in 2025, which naturally caused a lot of concern for visitors and the local community. It’s a sobering reminder that the ocean is a wild place.
We believe in being completely honest with our readers, and we’re very open about our own experiences. While we spent plenty of time swimming and surfing, the thought of what was beneath the surface was always in the back of our minds. Even though the water is only waist-deep. We constantly reminded ourselves that thousands of people enjoy these waters safely every single year, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore your instincts.
Is Wharton Beach worth visiting?
Absolutely.
Wharton Beach is not just another beach. It is a highlight of the region and quite possibly one of the most beautiful places in Australia.
Even now, we talk about this place all the time. There’s just something about the combination of that impossibly blue water, the squeaky sand, and the beautiful baby waves that just stays with you. We have seen a lot of coastline, but Wharton Beach really did feel different to us.
Why we loved Wharton Beach so much
Maybe it was the incredible clear water, the fun little waves, or the fact that some of our friends from the road were all there at once. Whatever it was, Wharton Beach completely lived up to the hype for us and we would return in a heartbeat.
