Camping Kalbarri Questions Answered
When we were planning our trip to Kalbarri, I had a few questions. Especially around whether you could camp in the National Park or if there were any decent free camps nearby. Here’s what I found out:
Is there free camping in Kalbarri?
Unfortunately, no. There’s no free camping allowed in Kalbarri town or the national park, and if you try your luck, there’s a good chance you’ll get a fine. The nearest free camp is Galena 24hr Rest Area, located on the North West Coastal Highway 77kms from town.
This spot has toilets, tables and a dump point. It’s the ideal place to break up a long drive. But keep in mind it’s over an hour’s drive from the national park, and even further from the town itself. In my opinion, it’s great for an overnight rest, but not so great as a base to explore Kalbarri.
Can you camp in Kalbarri National Park?
This one really surprised me. You can’t camp in Kalbarri National Park. It’s a bit of a shame because sunrise and sunset are incredible at some of the park’s attractions. You’ll need to base outside of the park and drive in to explore the national park.

Kalbarri Camping – Best places to camp
If you want to be close to the action, which can be hiking, fishing, snorkelling or just enjoying a day by the beach, here are our top 3 camping options in and around Kalbarri, depending on your setup.

Number 1: Lucky Bay, Kalbarri
Lucky Bay is by far our favourite spot to set up camp in Kalbarri. It’s about 30 minutes south of town, and only accessible by 4WD. Here you can camp right on the beach if you’re fully self-contained, or set up behind the dunes where there are toilets and bins.
This place is a dream for anyone who likes snorkelling, fishing and beach camping. You can camp right at the lagoon, where it’s just a short paddle to the reef for some epic snorkelling.

What you need to know:
- 4WD access only
- No drinking water
- Dog-friendly, but dogs must stay on a lead
- $15 per night per vehicle. EFTPOS available with the camp host
- No bookings. First come, first served.
In our opinion, this is easily one of the best camping experiences on the Coral Coast.
Number 2: Kalbarri Caravan Parks
If you’re after some more comfort on your Kalbarri camping trip, or you just want to be close to town, there are a few options to choose from, but here are our top two picks based on location, facilities and things to do.
Tasman Holiday Park – Kalbarri Camping
This is where we stayed. It’s in a great location. Walking distance to the river, Chinamans Beach, restaurants and cafes, and even the daily pelican feeding (if that’s on your wishlist). The sites at Tasman Holiday Park were spacious and we got one that was tucked away between some trees with a bit of privacy.

Red Bluff Tourist Park
This caravan park is a favourite among surfers. It’s just up the road from Jakes Point, Kalbarri’s most epic surf break. It’s also a better base if you’re planning on exploring the coastal side of Kalbarri National Park. You’ll have a great sunset view over the ocean, and a bit away from the busy centre of town.
Number 3: Murchison House Station
We didn’t stay here ourselves, but we heard nothing but good things about this Kalbarri camping spot, so it deserves to be mentioned in this blog. Murchison House Station is just 12km out of town, and a great spot for families. It has a mix of outback vibes, river camping and adventure.
You can choose to camp at the Homestead Campground, or go fully off-grid at the 4WD bush camp on the north side of the Murchison River (only available from April to October). There’s also quite the history! Murchison House Station is one of WA’s oldest pastoral leases, dating back to 1858.
How to choose where to camp
Here’s the honest breakdown:
- Do you want remote + off-grid? Lucky Bay
- Do you want comfort? Caravan parks
- Do you want something in between? Murchison House Station
Your choice depends on how you’re travelling.
