Is Bullara Station worth staying at?

Bullara Station has become very popular over the past few years. You’ve probably seen it all over Instagram. And if you’ve been planning a trip to Exmouth or the Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, chances are high you’ve seen Bullara Station popping up. I’m sure you’ve seen photos of their bucket showers, scones or iconic burger nights. Their marketing is on point. They don’t just sell you a stay, they sell you an experience. And honestly, they do it well.

When you arrive, a camp host greets you and personally shows you to your site. This alone feels unique, and it sets the tone for what Bullara Station is all about. A warm, authentic station stay.

As someone who worked in Marketing & PR for over 15 years, I know a good hype campaign when I see one. And like many of you, I’ve fallen into the Instagram trap before. So when we planned our trip through Exmouth, I just had to find out for myself. Is Bullara Station really worth staying at?

The answer is yes! But (and there always is a but)…it depends on what you’re after. If you love the outdoors, enjoy authentic experiences, and don’t mind being a little off the beaten track, you’ll love it. If you prefer being closer to town or the beach, then some other camping options in Exmouth might suit you better.

There’s a lot of information about Bullara Station out there, but I wanted to share my personal (non-sponsored) experience with you after staying here for three nights. Here’s everything you need to know about Bullara Station, what to expect and whether you should book a stay.

What’s Bullara Station like?

Located about 86km south of Exmouth and 66km north of Coral Bay. It’s right in the middle, which makes it a great base if you’re planning to explore both areas. Bullara station is a working cattle station turned into a campground and it has this rustic, country charm that makes you instantly slow down. Red dirt and dust everywhere (don’t do laundry on windy days like us), plenty of space and a relaxed vibe.

There are a few options here for where to stay:

  • Safari huts: a glamping-style experience for those who want comfort
  • Hale hut: a private cabin-style option for couples or small groups
  • Powered and unpowered campsites: plenty of space to set up camp. Perfect for caravans, camper trailers, rooftop tents or tents.

The facilities are part of the charm. Being outdoors and using the bucket showers is the best experience. It’s basic and simple, but that’s the point.

The famous Bullara Cafe

You can’t stay at Bullara station without stopping by the cafe. This is where the magic happens. Their scones are legendary. Big, fluffy and served with jam and cream. They also do pies and sausage rolls, and if you can get your hands on their chunky beef pie, you’re a lucky man or woman!

The shop

They sell their local beef at the shop/reception. But they sell out quickly… If you want some of their delicious steak, make sure you queue by the time they open.

Things to do at Bullara Station

There are a few things to do on the property that’ll keep you busy for a few days.

Sunset hill walk – 2.6km return

This is an easy walk with a banger sunset at the end. Climb to the top just before sunset and watch mother nature’s show. You’ll pass gum trees and spot plenty of native flora and fauna along the way.

Tin Can/Windmill Walk 2.2 km circuit

A lovely trail that winds through the bush. Keep an eye out for kangaroos, cockatoos and even eagles nesting above.

Explore the station

The Bush track is 4WD only and is about a 20km drive one way. It will take you to the bottom of the Exmouth Gulf. There’s a viewing deck with a table and some chairs, where you can relax and see wildflowers (in the season). You can fish off the tidal creeks near the boat ramp, or launch a tinny (a minimum of 1.5m tide is necessary to launch and access the gulf) and head towards the islands. The marine and birdlife is spectacular!

4WD to the gulf

You’ll need to fill in the sign out sheet before you leave for the gulf track. You can find a map on the wall in the camp kitchen. Ideally, you take a photo of this for reference. Staff will check each day to ensure guests have returned to the station.

So…is it worth it?

For us, yes. Bullara station was absolutely worth a stop. It’s not about luxury or convenience. For us it was soaking up the outback charm and coming together with friends we met on the road. But again, if you prefer spending your days at the beach or close to Exmouth’s main attractions, you might find Bullara Station a little too far out. In that case, you can split your time. Two nights here for the experience, and a few nights closer to town for convenience.

A good approach is to split your stay. Combine a couple of nights here with time closer to the coast using our guides to “camping in Exmouth”, “camping at Ningaloo” or “Cape Range National Park Camping”.
