3-5 Day Exmouth Itinerary: Ningaloo Reef & Town

If you’re planning a trip to Exmouth, you’re probably wondering how to structure your time. And that’s exactly where an easy-to-follow Exmouth Itinerary makes all the difference.

We’ve spent six weeks exploring this part of Western Australia, and if there’s one thing we learned, it’s this: a solid Exmouth itinerary needs to be flexible. Wind, tides and ocean conditions all play a role. The best Exmouth itinerary isn’t about rushing, it’s about planning smart.

This 3-5 day Exmouth itinerary is designed to give you the best possible experience of the area.

If you’re still planning your trip, it’s worth combining this Exmouth itinerary with:

Exmouth Itinerary overview

Here’s how this itinerary flows:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Exmouth town + sunset at Charles Knife Canyon
  • Day 2: Whale shark tour
  • Day 3: Cape Range National Park + snorkelling
  • Day 4: Ningaloo Coast and beach camping (4WD only)
  • Day 5: Flexible

This itinerary works whether you have 3, 4 or 5 days.

Day 1: Arrive in Exmouth

Every good Exmouth itinerary starts the same way. Getting yourself set up properly. Ideally, you stocked up on food at Carnarvon on your way to Exmouth. If not, don’t worry, there are two IGAs in Exmouth. It’s just a bit more expensive…

Today you can explore town, get a coffee at one of the great cafes and head to Charles Knife Canyon for sunset. This is one of the best viewpoints in Exmouth and a perfect start to this Exmouth itinerary.

Stay overnight in Exmouth town at one of the caravan parks.

Day 2: Whale Shark Tour

If you’re visiting between March and July, this is one of the biggest highlights of any Exmouth itinerary. The Whale shark tour is a full-day experience that includes swimming with whale sharks and reef snorkelling. You’ll be picked up by the tour operator in town at a place of your choice.

If you’re travelling outside of whale shark season, you can either opt for a humpback whale tour or enjoy a snorkelling day.

You’ll spend another night camping in town.

Day 3: Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Reef Snorkelling

Head into Cape Range National Park early, ideally first thing in the morning.

Morning: Ningaloo Reef Snorkelling

You can’t build an Exmouth itinerary without this. Top snorkelling spots:

  • Turquoise Bay
  • Oyster Stacks (high tide only)
  • Lakeside

Conditions are usually best early, so prioritise snorkelling first in this Exmouth Itinerary.

Afternoon: Explore Cape Range

Put on your hiking shoes and walk either Mandu Mandu Gorge or Yardie Creek Gorge. Or both. Afterwards, you can relax at one of the beaches along this coastline, or if you’re a keen kitesurfer and the wind is up, head to Sandy Point for your session. You can watch the sunset from the beach, or head over to Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, a favourite sunset spot amongst locals.

Tonight you’re staying at either Yardie Homestead or one of the camping spots in Cape Range National Park.

Day 4: Ningaloo Coast and Beach Camping

This is where this Exmouth itinerary shifts gears. Head south along the Ningaloo Coast. You’ll need a 4WD to get there.

Camping at Ningaloo

If you’ve booked it, this is where this Exmouth itinerary becomes something special. Think remote beachfront camps, direct reef access, fully off-grid. Camping at Ningaloo, especially South Lefroy is one of the most unique parts of this Exmouth itinerary.

If you’re not camping there, it’s still worth doing a day trip. You’ll find quieter beaches and fishing spots.

Day 5: Flex day

This is the most underrated part of any Exmouth itinerary. Why does it matter? Well, wind changes conditions, tours depend on the weather, and snorkelling isn’t always perfect. Use this day to revisit your favourite spot, catch up on anything you missed, or just relax. It’s a smart move to include a buffer day in your Exmouth itinerary.

How much does it cost?

How much this is actually going to cost depends on how you travel. Exmouth can be done relatively affordably, but if you include tours, it can get expensive quickly.

For Camping and accommodation:

  • Cape Range NP camping costs around $15 per night + additional WA parks pass
  • Camping at Ningaloo is around $10 – $15 per adult per night

Our Recommendation

The best Exmouth itinerary isn’t the one that ticks off the most things. It’s the one where you get in the water early, stay flexible and enjoy the slower moments. The wind in Western Australia can be unpredictable and rough, so calculate that in when you’re planning a trip to Exmouth.
