If you’re planning a trip to Purnululu National Park, having a clear Bungle Bungles itinerary makes such a difference. You’ll quickly realise that it’s not a destination to just wing it. Distances are longer than they look, the heat is real, and once you’re in, you’re fully off-grid.

We spent a few days exploring the park ourselves, and this is the Bungle Bungles itinerary we wish we had before arriving. It’s realistic, accounts for driving times, and lets you experience both the northern and southern sections without rushing.

Whether you have two or three days, this Bungle Bungles itinerary will help you make the most of your time.

Before you start this Bungle Bungles itinerary

Before diving into the day-by-day plan, there are a few important things you need to know.

The park is split in two very different areas: the northern end and the southern end. This Bungle Bungles itinerary is designed to cover both without wasting time driving back and forth.

You’ll also need to factor in the access road. The drive into the park via Spring Creek Track can take between 1,5 and 3 hours, depending on conditions. That’s why your first day in this Bungle Bungles itinerary is built around arrival and easing into the experience.

Day 1: Arrival & northern section

Most travellers following this Bungle Bungles itinerary will arrive from either Halls Creek or Kununurra. By the time you reach the Spring Creek Track turn-off, it’s often already late morning or around lunchtime. From there, allow between 1,5 and 3 hours to drive into the national park, depending on conditions. Take your ti e on the track, lower your tyre pressures and treat the drive as part of the experience.

โžค If you’re unsure what to expect from the track, read the Bungle Bungles 4WD Guide

Once you arrive inside Purnululu National Park, stop at the visitor centre. It’s worth checking in for the latest updates on track conditions, walk access, and timing for places like Echidna Chasm.

After that, continue to the northern section and set up camp at Kurrajong Campground. This is the best base for the first part of your Bungle Bungles itinerary.

In the late afternoon, head to Kungkalanayi Lookout for sunset. It’s one of the best viewpoints in the northern section, and a perfect way to end your first day.

During the dry season, nights can get surprisingly cold. There are no campfires allowed, and sunset comes early, so don’t expect a long evening. Most people settle in for an early night, which actually works well for the next day.

Day 2: Mini Palms Gorge, Echidna Chasm & Helicopter flight (optional)

Day two of this Bungle Bungles itinerary is one of the highlights, especially if you enjoy hiking. Start early and head straight to Mini Palms Gorge. Allow 2,5 hours for the return walk. It’s not the hardest hike in the park, but it’s longer than it looks and the heat can build up quickly.

This is one of the more underrated stops in the Bungle Bungles itinerary, with sections that feel surprisingly lush compared to the surrounding landscape.

After Mini Palms, drive to Echidna Chasm. The walk itself is relatively short, around 30 minutes one way, but timing is everything here. You want to be inside the chasm around 11 am, when the sun is high enough to shine down into the narrow gorge. It only lasts a few minutes, but it’s one of the most memorable moments in this Bungle Bungles itinerary. That’s why it’s important to check the time with the visitor centre, as timing can vary slightly depending on the time of the year.

After your walk, have lunch at one of the sheltered picnic tables at the Echidna car park.

In the afternoon, begin the drive to the park’s southern section. Allow around 80 minutes for this part of the Bungle Bungles, as the road conditions keep speed low.

Once you arrive, set up camp at Walardi Campground. This is the ideal base for exploring the Bungle Bungle range. And if you still have time and energy, this is also a great opportunity to book a scenic helicopter flight. Seeing the domes from above adds a completely different perspective to your Bungle Bungles itinerary, and many travellers consider this as one of the highlights of their trip.

Day 3: Bungle Bungle Range

The final day of this Bungle Bungles itinerary focuses on the iconic southern section. Start early again to make the most of the cooler temperatures. Head out to explore the domes while the light is still soft. The Domes walk is an easy introduction and a great way to experience the scale of the formations. From there, continue on to Cathedral Gorge.

This is one of the standout locations in the entire park and a must-do in any Bungle Bungles itinerary. The walk is short, but the setting is incredible, with towering rock walls forming a natural amphitheatre.

If you have time and energy, continue on to Piccaninny Creek Lookout. It gives you a broader perspective of the Bungle Bungle Range and helps you understand just how vast the landscape really is.

After exploring the southern section, it’s time to start making your way out of the park. The ideal time to do the drive out of the park is in the afternoon, during the heat of the day.

What to pack for this 3-day Bungle Bungles itinerary?

One thing we underestimated was how much preparation actually matters. Once you’re inside Purnululu National Park, there are no shops, no fuel stations and very limited facilities.

  • Water: Make sure you bring enough water for each day, especially if you plan to hike. The heat builds quickly, and even in the dry season, there are very few places to cool down.
  • Walking shoes: Good walking shoes are essential. A lot of the trails in this Bungle Bungles itinerary involve uneven ground, loose rocks and sections where you’ll need proper grip.
  • Sun Protection: Another big one. A hat, sunscreen and lightweight long sleeves will make a big difference.
  • Camping gear: Make your setup is suitable for remote travel.
  • Warm clothes: Nights can get surprisingly cold, so bring warm layers, even if the days are hot.

Mistakes to avoid

There are a few common mistakes people make when planning their Bungle Bungles itinerary, and avoiding them can completely change your experience.

1. The first thing is driving times. Distances inside the park might not look far, but road conditions mean everything takes longer than expected. Trying to rush between the northern and southern sections in one day often leads to frustration.

2. Timing Echidna Chasm wrong is another common one. If you don’t arrive at the right time, you’ll miss the light hitting the gorge walls. It only lasts a few minutes, but it’s on eof the most memorable moments in any Bungle Bungles itinerary.

3. Trying to do too much. This is not a destination where you want to rush. The Bungle Bungles is already quite the detour, so make sure your itinerary has time to slow down, take it all in and enjoy the experience properly.
