Karijini Itinerary: How to plan 3-7 days in the Pilbara

Planning a trip to Karijini can feel a bit overwhelming. There are so many gorges, hikes and swimming spots. And everything is spread out more than you expect. After exploring Karijini National Park for two weeks, we’ve put together this Karijini itinerary, so you can structure your time properly.

Whether you have only 3 days or an entire week, this Karijini Itinerary has everything you need to plan your days.

➤ If you haven’t read it yet, start with the full overview: Complete guide to Karijini National Park

How many days do you need in Karijini?

There is no perfect Karijini itinerary. It all depends on how much time you actually have.

  • 3-4 days: highlights only
  • 5-6 days: ideal
  • 7+ days: relaxed, full experience

Karijini is not a place to rush. Distances are big, hikes take time, and you’ll want to factor in some swims, breaks, and travel between locations.

Before you start: How Karijini is laid out

Karijini National Park is split into two main areas:

  • Eastern side: Dales Gorge, Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool
  • Western side: Hancock Gorge, Weano Gorge and Joffre Gorge

Then you also have:

  • Hamersley Gorge (further out)
  • Mount Bruce (outside the main gorge system)

➤ This is why your camping location matters so much.

➤ Full Guide to Mount Bruce hike

It’s a 9km return hike and one of the most rewarding experiences in the region.

Our tip? Don’t do it at sunrise, go in the afternoon. We started at 2 pm (July) and walked down during sunset.

Where to stay during your itinerary?

This itinerary only works if the camping spots match up. Read through our Karijini camping guide to fully understand your camping options. The names of the campgrounds I’ve used are as they appear on the app WikiCamps.

Quick summary:

  • Buddha’s Overnighter: Best for Hamersley Gorge

Key tips for this Karijini Itinerary

  • Start early: avoid hiking in the middle of the day
  • Group nearby gorges: don’t zigzag across the park
  • Allow extra time: everything takes longer than expected
  • Check conditions: always walk into the visitor centre to check the current conditions. Roads might be closed, and some pools might be stagnant, meaning no swimming is allowed.

Don’t try to see everything

This is the biggest mistake you can make. Karijini isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about experiencing a few places properly. If you try to rush, you’ll spend more time driving than exploring, and you’ll miss the best light. Pick your highlights and enjoy them.

Plan your Karijini Itinerary

Karijini National Park is one of the most unique places in Western Australia, and it rewards proper planning. If you want to spend more time in the gorges and have a better overall experience? Then get your itinerary right, and everything flows.
